How to Check GST Refund Status Online (Step by Step)
To check GST refund status, log in to gst.gov.in → Services → Refunds → Track Application Status and enter your ARN. You can also track without logging in, using the ARN from your RFD-02 acknowledgement.
You can check your GST refund status on the GST portal (gst.gov.in) under Services → Refunds → Track Application Status, using the ARN (Application Reference Number) of your refund application. Tracking is available with or without login.
Step by step: how to track a GST refund
- Get your ARN — it appears on the RFD-02 acknowledgement issued after you file the refund application.
- Open the portal — go to gst.gov.in → Services → Refunds → Track Application Status.
- Enter the ARN — select the refund option, enter the ARN and search (log in first if you want to see all applications under your GSTIN).
- Read the stage — the portal shows where the application is and any order issued against it.
What each GST refund stage means
| Form | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| RFD-02 | Acknowledgement — the application is complete and has been accepted for processing. | Note the ARN and track progress. |
| RFD-03 | Deficiency memo — the officer found gaps or missing documents. | File a fresh, corrected application promptly. |
| RFD-04 | Provisional refund order — for zero-rated supplies, a provisional refund of 90% of the claim is sanctioned. | Watch for the payment order and bank credit. |
| RFD-05 | Payment order — the sanctioned amount is released for credit to your bank account. | Reconcile the credit with your bank statement. |
| RFD-06 | Final order — the refund is finally sanctioned, partly sanctioned or rejected, with reasons. | If rejected or reduced, review the reasons and consider an appeal. |
What if the refund is delayed?
A refund not paid within the statutory period carries statutory interest in your favour. If your application has been sitting at the same stage for a long time, or you have received an RFD-03 or a show-cause notice, it is worth getting the file reviewed before responding.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a GST refund take?
An RFD-02 acknowledgement is usually issued within about 15 days of a complete application. For zero-rated supplies a provisional refund of 90% is generally granted within about 7 days (RFD-04). The final order (RFD-06) is due within 60 days of a complete application; delayed refunds carry statutory interest.
What is an ARN?
The ARN (Application Reference Number) is the unique reference generated when you file a GST refund application. It appears on the RFD-02 acknowledgement and is what you enter on gst.gov.in under Services → Refunds → Track Application Status to see where your refund stands.
What does RFD-03 mean?
RFD-03 is a deficiency memo. The officer has found the application incomplete or missing documents. You must file a fresh refund application with the deficiencies corrected; the original application does not proceed.
Can I check GST refund status without logging in?
Yes. On gst.gov.in, go to Services → Refunds → Track Application Status and enter the ARN from your RFD-02 acknowledgement — no login is needed. After logging in you can also see all refund applications filed under your GSTIN.
What should I do if my GST refund is stuck?
Check the current stage using your ARN. If an RFD-03 deficiency memo or a show-cause notice has been issued, respond with corrected documents promptly. If the application has sat at one stage well beyond the statutory period, get the file reviewed and follow up with the jurisdictional officer.
